Discovery Science Place Announces Re-Opening Plans
Additional Update 07/02/2020:
Pursuant to the governor’s orders the DSP will be amending it’s existing mandatory mask policy to include all guests age 11 and up. We highly recommend a mask for ALL visitors to maximize health and safety.
“The order, which takes effect Friday, 07/03 at noon, requires people over age 10 to wear face coverings inside businesses and other buildings or spaces open to the public.”
Additional Update 06/25/2020:
As of June 29th, 2020 all visitors to the Discovery Science Place age 12 or older MUST wear a facial covering or mask while in the museum. Those guests who arrive without masks will not be granted entry regardless of their ticket status. Guests who continually remove or lower their masks while visiting will be asked to leave the facility. This is for the protection of ALL guests and staff. Visitors under age 12 are not required to wear masks, but it is encouraged.
Tyler, Texas – The Discovery Science Place announced its plans for re-opening to the general public after being closed due to COVID-19 health concerns. The 27-year-old non-profit family science museum will re-open to the general public at a reduced capacity beginning Friday, June 19th. The museum will end their closure initially with a “members-only” weekend June 12th-14th. “We wanted to first thank our members who have been so patient and supportive during this very tough time for the museum”, said executive director Chris Rasure.
The Discovery Science Place will be re-opening with a limited capacity of visitors and with numerous new procedures in place designed to maximize health and safety. The facility will be open Fridays through Sundays only with scheduled time slots for visitors at 10am-12noon Fridays and Saturdays and 1pm-3pm Fridays through Sundays. “The one hour between time slots will allow us to clear the museum and thoroughly clean and reset.” Fifty visitors per time-slot will be allowed entry initially, but that number may be raised in the future based on the advice of state and local health officials.
Guests will be required to obtain their admission tickets ahead of time or risk being turned away at the door if the museum is already at capacity. Museum members must also obtain tickets ahead of time, but will receive a 100% discount on admission as long as they log-in with their DSP member credentials when purchasing. Tickets can be purchased via the Discovery Science Place website at www.discoveryscienceplace.org.
The Discovery Science Place has taken numerous steps to better serve the public and their staff while following CDC, state, and county guidelines. Capacity will be limited to encourage social distancing, all guests will be required to wash their hands at a newly-built hand-washing station in the entry courtyard before entering, plexiglass screens have been added to the front counter, only cashless transactions will be allowed on-site, additional sanitation bins have been placed around the museum for items that guests feel need additional cleaning, enhanced cleaning procedures will be in place throughout the day and at close, and while face coverings will not be required of guests, they are recommended.
