Mission

Discovery Science Place is a non-profit, hands-on learning environment whose purpose is to ignite curiosity in young minds through fun, hands-on exploration.

(adopted by the Board of Directors, July 2010)

Values Statement

As a board of directors, volunteers, and staff dedicated to the mission of igniting curiosity in young minds through fun hands-on exploration, we have four core values.  Everything we do is guided by the values we share.  We practice these values through our programs and our actions.

Education We believe that education is an investment in our local, regional, national and global communities.  As individuals and as an organization, we…

  • believe that learning should be fun and creative to ignite the curiosity of young minds
  • believe that educational opportunities should be accessible and affordable for everyone regardless of ability, age, income, faith, race or ethnicity
  • believe that cutting edge, innovative, and enthusiastic hands-on educational experiences are critical to learning for all ages
  • believe education is critical to the development of future leaders
  • believe education is critical to economic stability

Responsibility We use our resources wisely and we are loyal to our audience with a focus always on discovery.  As individuals and as an organization, we…

  • value “results” as we evaluate our programs for effectiveness and relevance.
  • value the actions and decisions of our board of directors as they protect and guide the organization
  • value a safe and clean environment for our visitors
  • operate in a fiscally sound manner and are good stewards of the funds we receive
  • value our cooperative alliances with other organizations and agencies dedicated to the educational experience
  • value our role as a corporate citizen and our responsibility to the greater good of the community

Integrity We respect each other and we seek to earn the respect of others.  As individuals and as an organization, we……

  • value our commitment to always being honest, trustworthy, and  professional in the internal and external operations of the organization
  • agree to disagree
  • agree to seek consensus and support collective decisions that are made as a group
  • agree to assess ourselves
  • believe in transparency and accountability to our constituents, the community at large, and our donors

Change We are always aware of a changing environment and we work to be proactive in response to change.  As individuals and as an organization, we...

  • invite the evolution of change
  • invite community input and we value the opportunities and innovations that change presents
  • proactively seek input from industry, education, guests, and donors to stay current
  • celebrate the opportunities that change can bring
